Book Review: Divergent by Veronica Roth

Divergent
By Veronica Roth
Young Adult Dystopian
Pages: 489
Average Rating: 4.43

Before I get into what I think of this novel, here is what Goodreads has to say:

Beatrice "Tris" Prior has reached the fateful age of sixteen, the stage at which teenagers in Veronica Roth's dystopian Chicago must select which of five factions to join for life. Each faction represents a virtue: Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite. To the surprise of herself and her selfless Abnegation family, she chooses Dauntless, the path of courage. Her choice exposes her to the demanding, violent initiation rites of this group, but it also threatens to expose a personal secret that could place her in mortal danger. Veronica Roth's young adult Divergent trilogy launches with a captivating adventure about love and loyalty playing out under most extreme circumstances.
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars. Loved this book.

My overall thoughts/Impressions: I have heard such great things about this series and was really excited to read it. I went in with high expectations, and this novel met those expectations.

This novel had enough romance, action, suspense, and intrigue to keep me hooked. Dystopian novels always intrigue me and this one was no exception. The main character Tris is a character that I found myself rooting for from the very beginning. Tris is in the midst of a faction training people to be killers, but she doesn’t lose herself in the process. She’s brave but kindhearted. She’s one tough heroine and one that I really liked.

And then there was “Four” another character I loved. He was another fierce character with just enough mystery to keep my attention. Four was another guy character that I really liked.

And the writing in this novel was compelling, and masterfully crafted. Roth has created a world that readers will love from the very first page to the very last page. She has created an all-star cast that will keep readers riveted from the very beginning to the very end.

I’m definitely going to be keeping my eye out for Insurgent, the sequel. Roth is an author that I’m certainly going to be keeping tabs on.

Definitely recommended to fans of dystopian novels who want a tough heroine facing a corrupt society.

In Summary: A great dystopian tale of adventure, corruption, mystery, self-identity, and romance that will capture any reader’s attention. This was a novel that I loved. A great read that is definitely recommended.

Warnings/Side-notes: Minor violence and death. Sexual tension and attempted rape scene, but really I didn't find this novel offensive.

The Wrap-up: I’m so glad my friend let me borrow this novel so I could read it. I loved the characters, the plot, the writing, and the world which Roth created. I’m really excited for Insurgent to come out.

Love,

Danica Page
