Book Review: Lengths by Steph Campbell

(Lenghts, #1)
by Steph Campbell and Liz Reinhardt
New Adult Realistic Contemporary Romance
Released on: August 9, 2012
Average Goodreads Rating: 3.70
Pages: 189

Before I get into my review, here's the synopsis available on Goodreads:

Nineteen-year-old Whit Conrad leaves her conservative Pennsylvania home for sunny California, looking for independence, a fresh start, and a place to stash her grief. She promptly finds a job at a tattoo parlor, a craptastic first apartment, and one friend—Ryan—who is a little less friend, a little more benefits.

Deo Beckett is a soulful surfer with a passion for tattoos and beautiful women. On the eve of his twenty-second birthday, he finds himself living with his grandfather, recently unemployed, and seriously adrift. He doesn’t know much about what he wants out of life, but he does know his current situation isn't cutting it.

When Deo meets Whit, she’s all sexy makeup and fierce, smart-ass fun. It doesn’t take him long to see past her tough shell. And when he gets a good look at what's under all the superficial stuff that usually gets his attention, it leaves Deo wondering if there might be more to life than living fast and free.

Too bad Whit has a past she doesn't plan on sharing—no matter how hot Deo is. She might want him, but she knows better than to let her guard down.

Deo falls for Whit, and falls hard. But everything about her, down to that mysterious tattoo and the way she thrashes in her sleep, tells him that the girl he loves is hiding something. And the more he pushes for answers, the more Whit pulls away.

Having your guard up is one thing, but are the lengths Whit goes to to protect her secret worth throwing away the second chance she has at happiness with Deo?

My Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars.

An Overview of the Novel: Whit Conrad is leaving a painful past behind her. She's left her home in Pennsylvania and has moved to California.  Now she's working for a tattoo artist. Then she meets Deo.

Deo is attractive and Whit might be attracted to him. But Deo would want a commitment and that's something that Whit is not prepared to give.

Deo will admit he's fallen hard for Whit, but Whit seems unable to feel the same way. He knows something is wrong with Whit. She thrashes at night. He knows she is hiding something.

Can Deo convince Whit to give him a chance? These two unlucky lovers are going to have to face their pasts and their deepest secrets to truly love each other.

My Overall Thoughts/Impressions: I actually really liked this book. I wasn't sure what to expect of it, but I'd heard really good things about it from my friends so I gave it a shot.

I was actually pleasantly surprised. It wasn't my favorite in this genre, but I did still enjoy reading it. It was definitely a quick, fun read. I loved the characters and the writing style.

I just wish that the writing would have been a little bit more developed. I felt like Steph and Liz did a great job at portraying the hardships these characters faced, but it only touched the surface. I felt like they could have delved more into the characters.

I did, however, love the setting of the novel and found the characters to be really intriguing.  I definitely recommend this one to those who enjoy this genre.

So Why  3.5 out of 5 stars? For reasons I already mentioned. I felt like the characters could have been better developed. However, I did really love the novel and the setting. The writing for the most part was really entertaining. It made for an enjoyable book.

In Summary: A cute read that I really enjoyed. The novel flirted with moving into something really profound; however, it failed to reach that level. Having said that, I did really enjoy the novel.

Warnings/Side-notes: It's New Adult and so it's not meant for younger audiences. However,  it is fairly tame as far as New Adult novels go.

The Wrap-up: An enjoyable book. It was worth it for 99 cents. I am glad I bought it and really did love reading it. If you love New adult novels, then definitely check this one out.

  1. I have been wondering about this one. I have been dabbling in the New Adult Genre and saw this one on amazon the other day. With the character development do you mean they are one deminsional or just needed more detail? With it being a quick read was it to rush? I think i will definitely pick this one up on my kindle. Great review
