Most Influential Books: Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay

Hello Fellow Page-Turners,

Since I am still in Italy serving on a humanitarian service mission, I still don't really have time to review new books and write new reviews. :( For the last two months, I have shared my thoughts on two of my favorite novels. This month I'd like to switch gears ever so slightly and share my thoughts on one of the most influential books I have ever read. That book is Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay.

I have written briefly about this book before, but I'd like to talk about it in more detail.

July 16, 1942?Anyone? Does anyone even know what happened on this date?

I like to consider myself as something of a history buff and I had no idea. I have taken numerous world history classes and not once have I heard of this event. So naturally reading this book I turned to the internet and researched it.

This is the date of the Vel' d'Hiv Roundup of the Jews in Paris, France. This tragedy was instigated by the Germans, but the French were only too happy to comply. Ignoring the order only to take grownups, thousands of children were taken too.

On this day the French police rounded up 13, 152 Jews and took them to the Vel' d'Hiv stadium and left them there for weeks before shipping them out to concentration camps in Germany and ultimately the gas chambers. Nearly all of the children taken were killed. The French president finally apologized for this atrocity in 1995, over fifty years later.

This act is poignantly painted in Sarah's Key and this all-too possible tale broke my heart. This story is one that will leave you crying and deep in reflection about the world we live in. What killed me was I had never even heard of this before? Had you?

I went into this novel not knowing what to think about it. I had heard good things, but I didn't expect it to be this brilliant. Really, this book contains some of the best writing I've ever encountered and with the amount of books I read that's saying something.

This is a book I haven't actually reread yet but one that is forever imprinted into my mind. If you love history, read this book. This book is unlike any other book I've ever read. I can't begin to express my true thoughts about this book. There just aren't words to convey how much I love this book. But really, this is a book I recommend that everybody buy.

Who knows it might just change your view on life too.

If you'd like to learn more about this book, here's the Goodreads summary and the Amazon link.

Is there a book that changed how you viewed the world? If so, what book?

Love,

Danica Page
