Hot Releases: October 2013

Hello Readers,

I've now been in Italy for six months now. That's absolutely crazy. I love the work but am insanely behind in what books came out this month. I know these ones did. Did any of you read them? What other good books came out?

I'm beginning to get really behind in what popular books have come out recently. :( But I'm still loving the work.

New Releases:

Allegiant by Veronica Roth- I really want to know how this series  ends and hope it ends in a manner that I'm pleased with.

Emerald Green by Kerstin Geir-I'M SO JEALOUS!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS THE ONE BOOK I'M TICKED I CAN'T GO READ!!!!!!!!!!! Okay enough with the dramatics. Seriously I'm in love with this series. This is the VERY FIRST book I'm buying when I get back.

The Forever of Micha and Ella by Jessica Sorenson- This might be the book I'm second most jealous about missing. Did any of you read this one? Was it fabulous? Seriously, so jealous you guys beat me to this one.

Just One Year by Gayle Foreman- I haven't read Just One Day yet, but I'm dying to read both of them. Come on, it's Gayle Foreman, I'm sure I'll love it.

Reclaimed by Sarah Guillory- This one just sounds interesting and I also love the cover. I love this genre and so I'll probably give it a try when I get back.

Forgiving Lies by Molly McAdams- Her characters and stories downright frustrate me and yet they captivate me too so I'll probably end up reading this one and want to throw it against the wall the whole time I'm doing so but love it in the end.

Premeditated by Josin L. McQuein- So in love with this creepy cover and synopsis. I really really can't wait to read this one. It reminds me of Jay Asher's Thirteen Reasons Why, which I loved, so I'm super excited about this one. I just hope it doesn't let me down.

Did any of you read any of these? Would you recommend reading them?

What were your favorite books of the month? What books do I absolutely need to read?

Happy Reading!

Influential Books: Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

Hello Fellow Page-Turners,

Since I am still in Italy serving on a humanitarian service mission, I still don't really have time to review new books and write new reviews. :( But I'm loving my time here in Italy. Last month I shared one of the most influential books I've ever read and that was Sarah's Key by Tatiana De Rosnay. This month I'd like to follow suit.

Another really influential book that I read is one that actually is quite surprising and ironic. The book is Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. I'm not even sure that I really liked this novel more than a lot of the other novels I read. In fact, it was pretty average. It was well-written but not really that spectacular and yet it changed my outlook completely.

This novel was an assigned book in seventh grade. As I read it, my teacher spent a lot of time talking about Stargirl was a nonconformist and was just so comfortable in her own skin that she didn't care what people thought.

In my junior high days, I was very concerned with what other people thought. I wanted to fit in and then we read this book that celebrated nonconformity and told us that it was okay to be different. It changed my entire outlook.

As I read, I kept thinking, "you know, Stargirl is really strange and yet I wish I could be like her." Since then, I've learned to celebrate non-conformity. I'm not talking about doing anything too strange, but I just think that the idea that you should be comfortable in your own skin is so powerful.

Ever since then I've cared less about what people think about me and more about what I think. People say books can't change people or how people think. I disagree. This very simple book that I read in seventh grade changed my outlook on life. And now almost ten years later, I still remember it.

If you'd like to learn more about this book, here's the Goodreads summary and the Amazon link.

Is there a book that changed how you viewed the world? Is there a book that really did change how you think? If so, what book?
