Discussion: On finishing or DNFing books?

Hey Readers,

I found an awesome post by The Broke and Brokish on finishing and not finishing books. Check it out here.

I will admit that I did not read all the articles listed in her post, but I did read a few.

I thought I would pipe in with my two cents. I am a curious person by nature, always have been, always will be.

I have started many books and have not liked them and then they turn around and become beautiful and vice versa.

Once I start a book, I just have to finish it. The curiosity in me just demands it.

However, I have never finished The Little Woman despite trying many times, so I guess that's one DNF by default. Maybe one day....

I ALWAYS finish books, but there are certain things I do if I don't like a book.

1) I reread the synopsis. Come on, there was something in here that was good right?

2) I start skimming/reading faster. I start thinking yep this page is not good either, skip, skip.

3) I remind myself that others have liked this book and trudge on.

And at the end, often times I think well that was a waste of time.

And yet, I can't bring myself to stop reading a book once I start. It's a terrible habit.

What about you? What's your two cents? If you have a post on this, please link up. I'm trying to comment more on other people's posts.

Love,

Danica Page

  1. I do the exact same stuff when I seem to be not liking a book, or I simply DNF it. But I am a patient person, so this year, I might try to just survive the not so great books. Like you, I am a super or more like hyper curious person, so that always works well in our favour.

Thank you for stopping by our 2014 book survey post, and wish you a very bookish and lovely 2015. Happy New Year!

  2. I am the same way. Once I start a book I just have to finish it. It keep telling myself it will get better. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. Either way, I will finish the book.
    Happy New Year!

  3. I used to force myself through books I didn't like (I did the skimming pages thing, too) but finally I decided life is too short for bad books. I try not to feel guilty if I put down a book and start a better one instead because, for me, reading is supposed to be enjoyable!

    1. I understand what you mean. If I keep reading enough bad books, I might have to do the same. My curiosity just always gets the best of me.
