Before I get into my review, here's the synopsis from Goodreads:

For Zoey Odell, the definition of family is her two best friends, Maya and Addy. So when Maya makes the decision to leave her abusive husband, Zoey is only too happy to lavish her with support and a temporary home. Unfortunately, taking in her best friend also means seeing more of that no good do-gooder, Kellen Bradley.

For Kellen, the definition of family has just been shattered. After finding out that his brother is an abusive monster, he can’t help but question himself and his parents. The one thing he knows for certain is that he’ll do anything to take care of his sister-in-law and her children. For them, he would walk into gunfire, pass through the flames of hell…even go head-to-head with Zoey Odell.

Zoey has no intention of letting him in, but Kellen is done taking her crap. Life has just gotten real and he’s more than ready to shed his nice-guy image. When he finally stands up to her, Zoey starts seeing him in a new light. As the attraction turns mutual, she finds it more and more difficult to hide behind her carefully formed walls. And Kellen is finding himself more and more driven to tear those walls down.

My Rating: 3 out of 5 stars.

Disclaimers: I received an e-galley of this novel from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion. I was not obligated to write a good review nor did I receive any compensation for writing this review.

An overview of the Novel: Zoey is known as the girl with walls around her heart a mile thick. She's known as a heart breaker and the girl who won't give anything to a relationship.

What they don't know is that Zoey is haunted by a past that she doesn't realize is still affecting her. She's a bad girl and she's determined never to let anybody mess with her or with her friends for that matter. So when her best friend Maddy shows up at her house saying she's finally left her abusive husband, she's thrilled and determined to protect her. Nothing is going to stand in her way. Not even the nice guy Kellen.

Kellen is devastated when he learns that his brother has been abusing Maddy and determines to help her get back on her feet. There's only one problem--Zoey. She's determined not to let him get close to Maddy or her children. Kellen isn't going to take no for an answer. What he didn't expect was to be so fascinated by Zoey. Everybody's warning him to stay away from her, but Kellen isn't going to take no for an answer, not this time.

My Overall Thoughts/Impressions: I enjoyed this novel more than I thought it would. It was well-written and an interesting read. Zoey and Kellen were two interesting characters and I loved watching them interact and watching them grow through out the novel.

The writing is good, but lacked the depth I would have liked. Zoey and Kellen were great people, but they had some serious scars. I would have liked it if the author had dug into that side of the story more.

However, it's a cute quick read that fans of the new adult genre will love.

So why 3 stars? It just lacked that extra something, that extra depth to raise it to a 4 stars. It was a quick read, but not one that I would probably reread.

Warnings/Side-notes: Strong language. This novel uses strong language several times and is definitely for mature readers. There are references to sex, alcohol, and abuse. Those references are pretty vague for a new adult novel.

The Wrap-up: An enjoyable, quick read about two fiery characters that make this novel a cute read. Since the kindle edition is only $2.99, I'd say it is worth reading.
