Before I get into my review, here's the synopsis from Goodreads:

Dylan has a bad-boy past and a criminal record. He knows that rich, beautiful Jess is way too good for him, but she has always been the one person who sees through his tough exterior and straight to his heart, and he has been hopelessly in love with her from the first time they met. He would change his life for a chance with her. But trouble follows Dylan wherever he goes, and a deadly mistake soon forces him to hit the road and leave his dreams behind. He's on the run and in search of answers; answers to questions he wishes he'd never asked.

Cover: Do not be fooled by the cover. This is not a romance novel.

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars.

My Overall Thoughts/Impressions: I had the opportunity to read this book for free otherwise I never would have come across it.

I loved this book. It was heartbreaking and yet was an incredible deep read. There are some books that you are still thinking about them days later; this was one of them.

First off, I thought this novel would be a romance based off the cover. It wasn't. It's a novel that takes a hard look at the life of a boy who's father went to prison and the effects of gangs and illiteracy. There is a girl who plays a main part in the story but it's not a romance.

I loved the main character Dylan. Carolee Dean did a great job of making his voice come to live. I loved the issues this book tackled and pretty much everything about it.

The book made me want to cry, laugh, scream, smile, you name the emotion and I felt it while reading this one.

Definitely recommend this one.

So why 5 stars? Because it stood out to me. Days later, I'm still thinking about it and it tackled deep issues.

Warnings/Side-notes: Violence suitable for older teens. I don't remember if it swore or not. As far as sexual content, I don't remember thinking there was anything. If there was, it was a veiled reference.

The Wrap-up: Beautifully profound. A novel that will be on my shelf. Seriously, I know this isn't going to be a novel for everybody, but at least give it a shot. I loved it.

Love,

Danica Page
