Before I get into my review, here's the synopsis from Goodreads:

When Edy Phelps falls hard for her best friend, she knows nothing can come from it. Forget actual chemistry, or the fact that she cherishes his mother more than her own; centuries of tradition say that Hassan will grow up, marry the girl his parents pick, and forget his best friend: the dancer with the bursting smile. Except he can't.

In a world erupting with possibilities for the boy with a body of steel and dreams of the NFL, everything seems promised while nothing at all is; when he's denied the girl he wants most.

Two hearts. Two families devoted through generations of friendship. Could Edy and Hassan really risk all that? And yet ... how could they not?

My Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Disclaimers: I received an e-galley of this novel from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion. I was not obligated to write a good review nor did I receive any compensation for writing this review.

My Overall Thoughts/Impressions: The cover almost made me think that this book was going to be a fantasy; it's not. This is a realistic contemporary looking at two friends. Hassan is Indian; Edy is not. Hassan is Hindu; Edy is not. The differences go on and on. They have been best friends since they were children. But Hassan's parents have already promised him to marry another. Edy and Hassan's feelings can't matter, but they do.

I thought the book was intriguing and well written. However, I thought the start was really slow. It took me awhile to get into this book. The other problem was that I didn't really like any of the characters. I didn't dislike them. They all just got on my nerves.

Having said that, I did enjoy the book. I think Pugh created an interesting world. I am definitely very interested in reading the sequel.

I loved that this book dealt with interracial factors. That was probably my favorite part of the books was watching these two cultures collide and watching the characters discover how much their cultures defined them and how much their own hearts did.

It was an intriguing read.

So why 3.5 stars? A slow beginning and I didn't love the characters. A very interesting read, however.

Warnings/Side-notes: References to drinking, violence, and sex. It's definitely YA. Nothing is told in detail, but they are all mentioned.

The Wrap-up: An enjoyable book that I'm glad I took a chance on. I'll be interested in seeing what Pugh comes up with next. Recommended for fans of interracial romances/reading about the Indian culture.

Love,

Danica Page
