Before I get into my review, here's the synopsis from Goodreads:

FBI Agent Laurel Evertson's investigation into a scam targeting the elderly takes an unexpected twist when key evidence leads her to Morton Wilmington, a felon she arrested five years ago on her first undercover assignment. That case has haunted her since, and though she's vowed to forget Wilmington--and what she sacrificed to put him away--he is now her best lead.

Houston Police Officer Daniel Hilton fears his grandparents may be the scammer's next targets, and he'll do anything to protect his family--even force interagency cooperation. But he's quickly drawn to Laurel's empathy and zeal and agrees to follow her lead . . . even if it means teaming up with a felon. As the unlikely trio uncovers evidence suggesting the scam is more extensive and deadly than they imagined, both Laurel and Daniel find themselves in the crosshairs of a killer.

Together they must decide if they can trust Wilmington's claims of redemption, or if he's leading them straight into a double cross.

My Rating: 3 out of 5 stars.

Disclaimers: I received an e-galley of this novel from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion. I was not obligated to write a good review nor did I receive any compensation for writing this review.

My Overall Thoughts/Impressions:  I have either a love-hate relationship with DiAnn Mills. I have read several books by her and they always swing to the extremes.

This one was not my favorite novel by Mills. I thought that it was intriguing. However, the novel was slow in the beginning for me. I thought that it would have been nice if she had got to the action quicker.

I also thought that the ending was a bit rushed.

However, Mills is an excellent writer. Her suspense was masterfully built. It kept me guessing for a long time. Mills is excellent at creating engaging characters as well.

For fans of romance suspense who don't mind a novel that's a little slower, this one is great. The book is definitely an intense, gripping read.

So why 3 stars? For the reasons listed above, I thought the beginning was slow and the ending was rushed. However, it was an enjoyable read.

Can I read the series out of order? Yes, this one can be read as a stand-alone.

Warnings/Side-notes: Mild violence.

The Wrap-up: An intense, gripping read, albeit a little slow in the beginning. Not DiAnn Mills's best novel, but definitely an interesting read.

Love,
