Before I get into my review, here's the synopsis from Goodreads:

After seven years as a Chicago homicide detective, Lisa Grant has hit a wall. Ready for a kinder, gentler life, she takes a job as a small-town police chief. But the discovery of a human skeleton by a construction crew at the edge of town taxes the resources of her department. A call for assistance brings detective Mac McGregor, an ex-Navy SEAL, to her doorstep. As they work to solve the mystery behind the unmarked grave, danger begins to shadow them. Someone doesn't want this dead person telling any tales--and will stop at nothing to make certain a life-shattering secret stays buried.

Master storyteller Irene Hannon is back with an exciting new series featuring former special forces operatives now in the thick of the action in civilian life. Hannon is at the top of her game in this can't-put-it-down thriller that will have readers up until the wee hours devouring every page.

My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

Disclaimers: I received an e-galley of this novel from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion. I was not obligated to write a good review nor did I receive any compensation for writing this review.

My Overall Thoughts/Impressions:  It's Irene Hannon. So obviously I had insanely high expectations. I love her writing (as in I personally own every romantic suspense book Hannon has ever written.)

I was curious to see what plot line Hannon would come up with next. She's written so many different books with so many different themes that I was curious to see what angle she would take on this one.

First of all, the fact that the villain was a girl was very intriguing. I feel like girl villains are so rare. Hannon always does a great job at creating villains who have complex characters. This one was no different. You almost wanted to pity the villain, but obviously you couldn't due to her actions.

The mystery and suspense in this novel was masterfully done. This novel focused more on the suspense than the romance, at least in comparison with some of her other novels. I thought it was very intriguing. The idea of having them solving a 20 years+ crime was very interesting as well.

Naturally, the writing was fantastic. Some people have recently said that Hannon's books are predictable. I have to fight off rolling my eyes on that one. It's a romantic suspense--that means you're going to know who the bad guy is from the beginning. But that's great because you get to see the villain's motives. Also, it's a romance. That already gives you a huge clue as to how the novel will end.

However, the beauty comes from watching how Hannon plays with the typical thread of romantic suspense, how she develops her characters, or in other words how she arrives at the ending.

Hannon is a great writer and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

So why 4 stars? I adored it.

Warnings/Side-notes: Alcohol usage and drug usage. Mild violence.

The Wrap-up: Long-term fans of Hannon will find another intriguing addition to the long line of her other novels. For newcomers, they will discover why Hannon claims the title of one of the queens of inspirational romantic suspense.
