Before I get into my review, here's the synopsis from Goodreads:

Strong and adventurous Gwendolyn Barnes longs to be a knight like her chivalrous brothers. However, that is not an option for her, not even in the Arthurian-inspired Eden where she dwells. Her parents view her only as a marriage pawn, and her domineering father is determined to see her wed to a brutish man who will break her spirit.

When handsome, good-hearted Allen of Ellsworth arrives in Edendale searching for his place in the world, Gwendolyn spies in him the sort of fellow she could imagine marrying. Yet fate seems determined to keep them apart. Tournaments, intrigue, and battles--along with twists and turns aplenty--await these two as they struggle to find love, identity, and their true destinies.

My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

Disclaimers: I received a copy of this novel from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion. I was not obligated to write a good review nor did I receive any compensation for writing this review.

Why did I decide to turn the pages? Because I adored the first in the series.

My Overall Thoughts/Impressions: I adored the first one in the series so much that I was scared to read this one. I was worried I would be disappointed. I loved Merry Ellison (Robin Hood) so much that I didn't see how this one could possibly measure up. I shouldn't have doubted.

I thought that the connection to Camelot was slim at best, which I actually liked. I wasn't looking to read a retelling of that story. And that isn't what I got.

The novel loosely alludes to that story, but it is a great piece in and of itself.
The plot line was masterfully crafted and kept me engaged for the entire story.

The Characters: Gwen and Allen were characters that left me intrigued from the very beginning. They were well crafted, complex characters.

Major Strengths: The plot line and overall story arc was fantastic.

Major Weaknesses: It did drag at parts, not too bad, but just a little.

So why 4 stars? Not without its flaws, but I still greatly enjoyed it.

Can I read the series out of order? Yes, it alludes to events and characters from the first. Allen, himself, is a character from the first, but you could read this out of order.

Warnings/Side-notes: Minor violence.

The Wrap-up: Fantastic. I can't wait to see what's next for Sleiman.

Love,

Danica Page
